Confirmation of Ngāti Hine
On 3 May 2022, the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations confirmed Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Hine (TRONH) as a hapū grouping comprising Ngāti Hine ki Waiomio, Ngāti Kahu ki Torongare ki Waiomio, Ngāti Kopaki, Ngāti Te Ara, Tekau i Mua, Ngāti Ngaherehere, Ngāti Te Tārawa, Te Orewai and Ngāi Tai ki Kaikou.
On 7 June 2024, Te Arawhiti and Te Puni Kōkiri endorsed the TRONH mandate strategy. Following feedback from hapū, TRONH made some updates to the mandate strategy, including the voting process, and undertook further consultation with their community.
On 19 December 2025, Te Tari Whakatau and Te Puni Kōkiri re-endorsed the TRONH mandate strategy. The mandate strategy sets out the process by which ngā hapū o Ngāti Hine will decide whether to confer a mandate for TRONH to seek, hold and protect a mandate for Ngā Hapū o Ngāti Hine, for future negotiations with the Crown.
TRONH are currently implementing their mandate strategy until April 2026, which includes holding mandate hui and undertaking hapū voting processes.
