Tupu Tonu - Ngāpuhi Investment Fund Limited
Tupu Tonu is a Crown company developing a portfolio of commercial assets that could be used in a Treaty settlement of Ngāpuhi historical claims.
The Ngāpuhi Investment Fund Limited, trading as Tupu Tonu, was launched in 2021. It is a significant step in the Crown’s efforts to progress the settlement of the historical claims of ngā hapū o Ngāpuhi and provide appropriate redress as part of future settlements.
Tupu Tonu is a Crown-owned company that acquires, grows and manages a commercial portfolio of assets that the Crown will offer in negotiations with Ngāpuhi. The initial value of the fund was $150 million. The value of the Fund has grown to approximately $162m (as at 30 June 2024).
Tupu Tonu invests in a variety of commercial assets. Investment decisions are made by Tupu Tonu’s independent board in accordance with its investment strategy. To date, Tupu Tonu has invested around $60 million in a range of whenua-based sectors, including horticulture, commercial property (including housing), and infrastructure (including energy generation).
A part of Tupu Tonu annual revenue is used to provide grants to ngā hapū me ngā uri o Ngāpuhi through their Tukua (disbursements) programme. The second round of Tukua disbursements in 2024 provided approximately $624,000 (excl GST) to Ngāpuhi hapū, marae and rōpū to date.
