Landbanking
The return of land is a key part of a redress package.
The Crown operates a system of landbanks across the country that hold a wide range of Crown properties available for use in settlements. The landbank is administered by Toitū Te Whenua – Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).

Crown land in the Ngāpuhi rohe
Due to the lack of suitable Crown-owned land in the Ngāpuhi rohe, the Crown has considered different ways it could increase its land holdings to be offered as redress. One of these is through Tupu Tonu, the Ngāpuhi Investment Fund.

The Crown Asset Audit records the Crown's understanding of its property holdings in areas of Te Tai Tokerau where Treaty settlements are still to be completed.
The Audit is provided by the Crown to support future discussions with mandated groups about redress in Treaty settlement negotiations. It is not intended to create any expectation about what may or may not be able to be negotiated. Including a property in the Audit does not mean it will be available as redress.
If there is surplus Crown-owned land in your rohe that you would like considered for landbanking, please fill out the landbanking request form below.

Private property
Very occasionally, when there is a willing seller, privately owned property can be acquired for the landbank. This is not common, and properties are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Te Tari Whakatau if there is a property on the market your hapū grouping is interested in.
