Welcome to the Office of Treaty Settlements and Takutai Moana – Te Tari Whakatau
The Office of Treaty Settlements and Takutai Moana: Te Tari Whakatau (formerly the Office for Māori Crown Relations - Te Arawhiti) is focused on resolving historical Treaty of Waitangi settlements and supporting Takutai Moana determinations.
Our vision is to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi | the Treaty of Waitangi.
On 24 February 2025, the Māori Crown Relations portfolio was transferred from Te Arawhiti to Te Puni Kōkiri. For more information on the Māori Crown relations functions, go to www.tpk.govt.nz.
On 24 February 2025, Cabinet also agreed to a new name for the independent departmental agency that better reflects its refined role. The Māori name 'Te Tari Whakatau' literally means the office 'te tari' where things are settled or determined 'whakatau'.
Te Tari Whakatau supports the Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister and works with whānau, hapū, iwi, Māori and across the public service to achieve its vision. We also provide strategic advice on Māori rights and interests that relate to Treaty settlements and Takutai Moana determinations.
